April Movies: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri & The Shape of Water

Check out these two Academy Award-winning movies in April! On Friday, April 13, at 1 pm we’ll show THREE BILLBOARDS OUTSIDE EBBING, MISSOURI and then again with subtitles on Friday, April 20, at 1 pm. Next, we’ll screen THE SHAPE OF WATER–this year’s Best Picture–on Friday, April 27, at 1 pm and then again with subtitles on Friday, May 4, at 1 pm. The suggested donation to view any of our movies is $1.

Three Billboards–starring Frances McDormand (Best Actress winner), Sam Rockwell (Best Supporting Actor winner), and Woody Harrelson–tells the story of a mother who is frustrated with the lack of progress by the local police in finding those responsible for the brutal murder of her daughter. To goad the department into action, she installs three billboards on the edge of town.

The Shape of Water–starring Sally Hawkins, Octavia Spenser, and Michael Shannon–is a strange and beautiful love story between a mute cleaning woman who works in a secret government lab and an otherworldly creature.

Intro to Vietnamese Language Class Starts April 6

Are you looking to learn a new language? Learn Vietnamese from Phu Nguyen, Vietnamese Senior Association of Oregon President and Hollywood Senior Center Advisory Committee Member, in a four-week class that meets on Fridays, April 6-27, from 2 to 4 pm. In the Introduction to Vietnamese Language Class, you’ll learn to communicate conversationally with everyday phrases, tones, and pronunciations. Phu, who is from Vietnam and a former teacher, says the class is great for social interaction and travel. The class is limited to 12. Please call 503-288-8303 to sign up.

April 6: AARP Smart Driver Class

It’s back! An AARP Smart Driver Class will be offered at the Hollywood Senior Center on Friday, April 6, from 9 am to 4:15 pm. The cost for AARP members is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. (Please bring a check to the class.) Update your driving skills and knowledge of rules/hazards of the road. Reduce your chances of receiving traffic violations, getting into an accident or becoming injured This class is facilitated by an authorized AARP Driving Instructor. Join Our Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group Sunday, March 25

FYI: The ALZHEIMER’S CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP will meet this SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2-3:30PM. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia is one of the most difficult tasks anyone can face. March 23: Pizza Lunch and a Movie (“Lady Bird”)

Please join us at the Hollywood Senior Center for pizza lunch at 11:30am and a movie–“Lady Bird”–at 1pm. Tickets for pizza are for sale at 9:30am. For a suggested donation of just $2, you get a slice of pizza, salad, beverage, and dessert. The suggested donation for the movie is $1. We’ll show “Lady Bird” with subtitles on Friday, March 30, at 1 pm.

“Lady Bird” is a charming coming-of-age tale set in 2002 Sacramento. An eccentric teenager (played by Saoirse Ronan) attends a Catholic high school and clashes with her mother (played by Laurie Metcalf) over her plans for the future. Gerta Gerwig directed the movie, which received Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress nominations from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
