June 6: Junior Rose Parade

The JUNIOR ROSE PARADE will take place on Wednesday, June 6, from 1 to 2:30 pm. NE 40th Avenue, where we are located, will close from 11:30 am to 3 pm that day. The center will be open, but individual instructors may cancel class that day. Please call (503-288-8303) and check. If you’d like to watch the parade from the Hollywood Senior Center, please arrive early.

June 5: Eating Well with Diabetes Workshop

Do you have pre-diabetes? Get your blood sugar levels under control through nutrition. Please join Julie Morrison, an intern from National University of Natural Medicine, for a discussion on ways to avoid diabetes through a healthy menu. Julie will lead “EATING WELL WITH DIABETES” on Tuesday, June 5, from 1 to 2:30 pm. Please call 503-288-8303 to register.

Volunteers Needed! Hollywood Senior Center Partners with Portland Pickles Baseball

Calling all baseball fans and super volunteers! The Hollywood Senior Center is excited to partner with Portland Pickles Baseball this summer. We’re looking for volunteers of all ages to volunteer as ushers and 50/50 raffle ticket sellers during home games at Walker Stadium in the Lents neighborhood. Volunteers receive a FREE meal and baseball cap, plus an afternoon/evening out at the ballpark. The Pickles will donate funds back to Hollywood Senior Center through the raffle.

Opening Day is Thursday, May 31, so we need volunteers from Thursday through Sunday, June 3 for the first exciting weekend of the season.

May 30: Civic Engagement Resource Fair at HSC

Come learn about organizations that make a difference in our community and find an opportunity and/or service that engages you! In honor of Older Americans Month, Hollywood Senior Center is hosting a CIVIC ENGAGEMENT RESOURCE FAIR Wednesday, May 30, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Fourteen organizations, including Store to Door, Elders in Action, Metropolitan Family Services, Ride Connection, Geezer Gallery, and Meals on Wheels, will staff tables and hand out raffle tickets for fabulous prizes. Pacifica Senior Living will provide the refreshments and Jam Yankees will play tunes we know and love. Stop by and bring your friends and loved ones.

May 22: Personal Safety Workshop

Please join the Portland Police Bureau Strength Programs for a PERSONAL SAFETY WORKSHOP this TUESDAY, MAY 22, 10-11:30am, at the Hollywood Senior Center. The class is designed to help people identify their risks, evaluate their strengths, and explore their options for dealing with the threat of violence.

In this safety workshop, emphasis will be place on:

  • identifying prevent strategies if faced with a dangerous situation
  • exploring intuition as a safety tool
  • understanding and practicing boundary-setting skills
  • learning various escape options.

May 15: Special Screening of Films Made about, for, with, and by Seniors

Watch films made by Hollywood Senior Center participants on their mobile phones! Please join us at at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, May 15, at the  Hollywood Senior Center for a Special Screening of  “Long-Distance Calls Films Made about, for, with, and by Seniors.” Earlier in the month, these filmmakers–your friends and neighbors–took a filmmaking workshop and created senior-centric works celebrating the raw, wise, wrinkled, and different.
