Hollywood Senior Center couldn’t operate without the help of wonderful volunteers who donate their time and talent to serve our community. Whatever your age, interests, or skills, you can find a rewarding volunteer or an internship opportunity with us.

Please note that the majority of our volunteer opportunities are remote at this time.

SPECIAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:

Holiday Greetings for Seniors and Others!

During this time of continued social distancing, bring cheer and comfort to community members with letters, cards, and drawings. Gestures like handwritten notes and well wishes show compassion and kindness and remind people that they are not alone. All ages are welcome to participate, and no volunteer application is required. This is a great at-home project for kids and families!
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
– Please keep cards non-denominational.
– Please write, “Happy Holidays from the Community for Positive Aging!”
– Leave cards unsealed
– Stamps are non needed (cards will be hand-delivered)
Cards need to be received at Hollywood Senior Center by the end of day, Friday, December 17.Holiday greetings can be mailed to the Community of Positive Aging at Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 NE 40th Ave., Portland, OR 97212 or dropped off Mondays through Fridays from 9am to 4pm, now through November 17th.

Volunteer Opportunities

Provide one-on-one technology support to help seniors and neighbors living in affordable housing in the Portland area stay connected through technology. Meet with individuals either remotely over the phone, in person at Hollywood Senior Center, or at individual residences in Portland. Troubleshoot technical support issues with participants and walk them through solutions.

TIME COMMITMENT: 1 to 4 hours per week

Support life-long learning and help increase social connection by leading a program or class! Use your knowledge to provide a class or learning session, or help lead fun and engaging activities you are interested in like walks, conversation groups, or crafts. Programming is currently offered mainly via Zoom and will be offered in-person in the future.

TIME & COMMITMENT: Weekly, Monthly, or Episodic opportunities available

Help create content and dynamic posts for the Community for Positive Aging’s Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms. Keep our Social Media up-to-date in order to advertise CFPA programming and community announcements and happenings. Cultivate ideas in order to increase our social media presence, and engage with CFPA’s online community.

TIME COMMITMENT:  Approximately 4 hours per week on a flexible schedule

Help receive and distribute food, supplies, donations, and more using your personal vehicle. This is a great opportunity to volunteer with a partner or friend! Transport food deliveries, program supplies, medical equipment, or other items as needed to and from buildings or individual residences in Portland.

TIME COMMITMENT:  1-4 hours a week or month on a regular schedule and/or as needed/on-call

 

Take photos and videos at Community for Positive Aging activities, programming, and special events. Maintain and organize photo and video files and create videos for special projects and more. Assist with filming or live streaming classes and activities, and assist staff with creating photo slideshows or video montages for internal needs or social media.

TIME COMMITMENT: 1-4 hours per week on a flexible schedule – must have weekday availability (the majority of activities are Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm).

Help ensure a great experience for participants of our online programming by providing support to Zoom class instructors and participants during virtual classes and activities. Open Zoom room for virtual presenters and act as Zoom host during the class/activity. Great opportunity to volunteer to help out with classes or activities you enjoy attending yourself!

TIME COMMITMENT:  1 to 4 hours per week, weekdays between 9:00am and 5:00pm.

Help lead an outdoor walking group activity for seniors in the Hollywood neighborhood. Commit to leading walks on a regular basis along with a co-volunteer. Welcome participants, take attendance, and give a brief talk including information on the walking route and potential hazards/risks.

TIME COMMITMENT:  Minimum biweekly 1.25-hour walk. (Current needs include every-other Tuesday, 10:30-11:45am or every Thursday, 12:00-1:15pm)

Help distribute culturally specific food to low-income Asian elders. Help unload, sort, bag, and load pallets of food at First Christian Church and then help clean up (all volunteers welcome). Additionally for those fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, or Korean, help is needed with distribution to the elders.

TIME COMMITMENT:  3rd Thursday of each month:

    • 10:00am – 1:00pm:  All volunteers are welcome!
    • 11:15am – 1:15pm and/or 1:00pm – 3:00pm: Bilingual volunteers fluent in Mandarin, Cantonese, or Korean.

NOTE: This opportunity takes place at First Christian Church – 1314 SW Park Ave

Help distribute food to neighbors living in affordable housing in the Portland area. Help unload, sort, bag, and load pallets of food at First Christian Church, and/or help transport food using personal vehicle to a designated  building. The help unload, set up, and distribute food to residents.

TIME COMMITMENT: 4th Thursdays of each month, between 10:00am and 3:30pm (Varied shifts within the total time frame are available)

NOTE: This opportunity takes place at First Christian Church – 1314 SW Park Ave and various buildings in the downtown area.

Internship Opportunities

Gain direct experience in designing, planning, and implementing programs, activities, and events for seniors and low-income neighbors. Gain practical skills and hands-on experience in event planning and program development while contributing your valuable time to further CFPA’s mission! Update the online activity and events calendar; create communications promoting activities and events as well as providing information and resources; assist program instructors and facilitators, and more!

TIME COMMITMENT:  Up to 16 hours per week for 3-4 months.

Gain practical skills and hands-on experience in social media and marketing while contributing your valuable time to further CFPA’s mission! Assist with creating content for digital and print advertisements and communications. Cultivate ideas in order to increase CFPA’s social media presence; engage with CFPA’s online community; and evaluate and adapt CFPA’s social media strategy as needed.

TIME COMMITMENT:  Approximately 4 hours per week for 3-4 months.

Group & Community Opportunities

Help us provide baskets of to-go treats to share with low-income neighbors living in affordable housing served by our Enhanced Resident Service team. 

In a time when we still can’t gather together for shared meals or get-togethers with snacks, these baskets provide a welcome special treat of fresh fruit or tasty snacks to brighten someone’s day! Brunch baskets will also be paired with take-home activities to enjoy as well as up-to-date information and resources for issues affecting residents. Your contribution helps us promote overall well-being in our community!

COMMITMENT:  Provide a one-time basket or “adopt a building” and create a monthly brunch basket!

Board of Directors Opportunities

Commitment: 2-3 hours a month for a two-year term

The Hollywood Senior Center is seeking new members to join the Board of Directors. It is seeking members who can bring financial acumen, organizational skills, creative thinking, and an understanding of the Center’s role in the community. In addition, professional non-profit and financial management experience is a plus.
